This is a Climate Emergency
Cosponsor the Blumenauer & Ocasio-Cortez Climate Emergency Resolution
The past five years have been the hottest on record. Epic floods and tornadoes are devastating the Midwest. Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at a record rate. Droughts
and wildfires are quickly displacing families from the only place they have ever called home. It is clear that this is an emergency. It is time for the United States Congress to act like it.
On July 10, we will join Senator Bernie Sanders in introducing a concurrent resolution to declare a national climate emergency in the United States.
Current Cosponsors: Blumenauer, Ocasio-Cortez
By declaring an emergency, Congress is acknowledging that we need all hands on deck to counter this catastrophe. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has already predicted that by 2030, the planet could warm by 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial
levels. The United States must join the more than 600 cities and four countries who have recognized the climate emergency for what it is.
The resolution is intended to show broad support for the idea that the climate crisis is an existential emergency similar to the threat posed during WWII and that aggressive, immediate action is needed to solve the climate challenge before us. Nothing
in this resolution empowers the President to invoke authority under the National Emergencies Act or the Stafford Act.
The time is now for Congress to acknowledge this emergency for what it is and swiftly mobilize federal resources in response to protect the interests of the United States and its people. We urge you to join us as original cosponsors of this resolution.
