Request for Cosponsor(s)
Protect Boxers with Minimum Health & Safety Standards!
Cosponsor Professional Boxing Safety Enhancement Act of 2019
Endorsed by the International Boxing Federation/United States Boxing Association
Please join us in following the advice of medical professionals to help protect the health and safety of boxers. Please cosponsor the
Professional Boxing Safety Enhancement Act of 2019 which makes common sense updates to boxing-health standards that have not been touched in 23 years.
The Professional Boxing Safety Act of 1996 was created to improve and expand the nationwide safety requirements for professional boxing. It established minimum health standards for all professional matches; required states to conduct physical examinations
of each boxer; have a ringside physician, ambulance, or medical personnel continuously on site for all matches; and provide boxers with health insurance.
Since the adoption of the law, and to respond to new health risks, the Association of Ringside Physicians and the Association of Boxing Commissions have recommended additional minimum health and safety standards. This bill codifies these recommendations:
- Require that boxers take a blood test to prove that they are negative for HIV and Hepatitis before receiving or renewing a boxing license.
- Require that an ambulance be continuously present on-site during matches.
- Require that emergency personnel with appropriate resuscitation equipment be continuously present on-site during matches.
I hope that you will join us and cosponsor the bipartisan Professional Boxing Safety Enhancement Act of 2019,
updating the 23-year-old regulations to enhance the health and safety of boxers.
