        Request for Cosponsor(s)

Dear Colleague,

We are writing to invite you to cosponsor H.J. Res. 35, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to enshrine women’s equality in the Constitution by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex.   The energy and support for the ERA is growing, and we are closer
than ever before to ratification.

When Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972, it attached a 7-year ratification deadline which was later extended three more years. By 1982, only 35 states out of the required 38 had voted to ratify the amendment. In the past two years, however,
grassroots campaigns have successfully secured ratification votes in Nevada and Illinois. Notwithstanding the expired deadline, we are now one state away from 38. Virginia’s State Senate recently voted to approve a ratification resolution, but the measure
was narrowly defeated in the House of Delegates. There are positive signs coming from other states, including Arizona and South Carolina where lawmakers are introducing resolutions to finally ratify the ERA.

We support the state efforts currently underway, but if a 38th state ratifies, we will be in uncharted territory as to what happens next. That’s why it is important for Congress to continue demonstrating strong support for the ERA.

The last time Congress held hearings on the ERA was in 1984, and it is past time to bring this issue front and center in our national discourse. One thing that has become glaringly obvious as a result of the MeToo movement is that sex discrimination remains
rampant in society. The only way to guarantee sustainable change and consistent enforcement of current anti-discrimination law is to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

As we look ahead to what may be a very exciting year for the ERA, we hope you will join us in cosponsoring H.J. Res. 35 to show that Congress remains committed to seeing that this critical amendment is added to the Constitution to fulfill the inscription
on the face of the Supreme Court building, “Equal Justice Under Law.” The legislation is identical to H.J. Res. 33 from the 115th Congress.

For more information or if you would like to cosponsor the legislation, please have your staff contact Christina Parisi (Rep. Maloney) at 5-7944 or or Samara Brown (Rep. Reed) at 5-3161 or Thank you for your consideration.
