General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas the freedom of the last American slaves. These 250,000 slaves were freed nearly two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.
Juneteenth was first celebrated in the Texas state capital in 1867 under the direction of the Freedmen’s Bureau.
Today, Juneteenth remains the oldest known celebration the end of American slavery. For more than 150 years, Juneteenth Independence Day celebrations have been held to honor African-American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all
