Request for Cosponsor(s)

Dear Colleague,

We write to request your support for the Washington Spy Ring Historic Trail Study Act of 2019. The bill will direct the National Park Service to study a fascinating story of revolutionary history and lead to the creation of the Washington Spy Ring National
Historic Trail.

Currently, the New York State Washington Spy Trail traces the route used by the Culper Spy Ring, a group of everyday colonists that risked their lives to deliver crucial information to General Washington during the Revolution. These patriots went behind
enemy lines to gather intelligence on British troop movements and fortifications in Manhattan and on Long Island for General Washington. The ring is credited with saving the Franco-American alliance by uncovering British plans to ambush the French army in
Rhode Island and Continental Army General Benedict Arnold’s conspiracy to surrender West Point to the British. After the war, General Washington traveled the route himself to thank members of the ring for their vital role in winning the war.

The story of the Washington Spy Trail has been brought to life by AMC’s critically acclaimed television show “Turn: Washington’s Spies”, a historical drama that tells the story of these unsung heroes. The Washington Spy Ring National Historic Trail will
provide Americans the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of patriots and learn more about the contributions of everyday people in securing our independence.

We invite you to join us in supporting this legislation to create the Washington Spy Ring National Historic Trail, recognizing in the National Trails System the path taken by the patriots that helped General Washington win the war.
