Dear Colleague:

I invite you to become an original cosponsor of a bill to mint commemorative coins in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the integration of baseball.

Like much of America in the 1940s, professional baseball was plagued by purposeful segregation, with white players participating in the Major Leagues, and African-Americans playing in the Negro League. That all changed on April 15, 1947, when Jackie Robinson
took the field for the National League’s Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. A few months later, on July 5, 1947, Larry Doby took his first at-bat for the Cleveland Indians, ending the color barrier in the American League.

Outside of the obvious effects on the field, the decision to integrate baseball was a seminal moment in the Civil Rights Movement in America. In the twenty years that followed, we saw real, concrete steps towards ending segregation in many aspects of society.
President Truman integrated the Armed Forces, the Supreme Court ruled school segregation unconstitutional in
Brown v. The Board of Education, and President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Almost 75 years later, we look back at the path Robinson and Doby paved for some of the greatest players the game of baseball has ever seen, such as Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, and Ken Griffey, Jr.. Baseball and the nation continue to benefit from the legacy
these pioneers left. A commemorative coin is a concrete way Congress can honor the anniversary of this monumental event in our nation’s history.

To sign on to the bill, please reach out to Joe Lustig ( with Rep. Cedric Richmond or Ben Johnson ( with Rep. Roger Williams.
