Dear Colleague,

How would you like to be a veteran who goes to a local emergency room, receives treatment, and once stabilized is told you need to travel to the nearest VA hospital, but that the cost of the ambulance service is non-reimbursable?  The average cost for this
medical transfer is $500 but it can be far more expensive if the veteran lives in a rural area.  This reality is happening to far too many of our veterans, creating financial hardships and jeopardizing their health.

Congress passed legislation in 1999 requiring the VA to reimburse medical expenses for treatment at private hospitals in emergencies up to the point of stabilization but neglected to include the cost of the ambulance transfer service as reimbursable.  Veterans
are left to either pay for the ambulance transfer or stay and pay for treatment at the non-VA facility out of pocket.

The VA Emergency Transportation Act corrects this disparity by clarifying that these medical transfers are reimbursable.  This change fixes a large, costly hole in the safety net the original law was intended to provide.  This measure is endorsed
by American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Military Officers Association, Reserve Officer Association, Blinded Veterans Association, Military Order of the Purple Heat of the U.S.A., Fleet Reserve
Association, and the Association of the United States Navy.

To support the VA Emergency Transportation Act or to find out more information, please contact Jared Patterson with Congresswoman Hartzler’s office at or David Ogle with Congressman Cunningham’s office at
