Please join Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) and Congressman John Garamendi (CA-03) in supporting the bipartisan legislation,
ABLE Accounts for Veterans Act of 2019 (H.R. 2656). This bill, if enacted, will allow service-related disabled veterans to contribute earnings that exceed their disability threshold into an Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) account,
without losing their current disability benefits.
- Currently, the unacceptable substantial gainful activity (SGA) limit for disability insurance is $1,220 per month; any money earned over this limit could result in a suspension or termination of disability benefits.
- ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts for disabled individuals that do not count against earned income limit. These accounts allow accrual of income over the benefit level, up to $15,000 per year, without negatively affecting benefit status.
- As a state permitted program, assets accumulated in ABLE accounts are disregarded from the designated beneficiary’s eligibility for most federal means-tested programs, allowing the member to earn a better living.
Service-related disabilities plague our veterans and often stunt the economic and personal growth of talented individuals in the prime of their professional lives. By maximizing the use of ABLE accounts, qualifying disabled veterans will continue to excel
as valuable members of the community and workforce without surrendering their benefits due to promotion or career advancement.
Please join me and Rep. Garamendi in co-sponsoring the ABLE Accounts for Veterans Act of 2019 (H.R. 2656).
