Dear Colleagues:

It is with great pleasure that we are writing today to ask that you consider joining the bipartisan Congressional Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Awareness Caucus.  For over ten years, this caucus has been the voice of Congress in promoting
organ and tissue donation and transplantation awareness to encourage every American citizen to consider being an organ donor.

Transplantation has saved and enhanced the lives of more than 764,000 people in the United States. It is the leading form of treatment for many types of end-stage organ failure. With this success, however, has come increasing demand for donated organs. Even
with advances in the use of living organ donors, the increase in the demand for organs needed for transplantation will continue to exceed the number available. The need to increase the rate of organ donation is critical. The list of people awaiting a life-saving
organ transplant now exceeds 113,000 men, women and children of all ages, and there is a dire shortage of organs to save them.  Last year an average of 100 patients were transplanted each day; however, a daily average of 16 patients died because the organ
they needed did not become available in time to save them and statistics show that half of those on the waiting list will never receive the gift of life.  As a member of the Congressional Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Caucus, there is an opportunity
to positively impact the rate of life-saving organ donation and lend a national voice to this vital issue.

Please consider raising awareness and showing the importance of organ donation by joining this caucus. If you have an interest in joining the
Congressional Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Awareness Caucus,
please contact Ian Fluellen in Congressman Jim Costa’s office at 5-3341.

Sincerely,
