Sending Office: Honorable TJ Cox
116th Congress Original Cosponsors:
Abby Finkenauer (IA-1) and Amata Radewagen (AS-at large)
We invite you to cosponsor the Study of Office of Rural Affairs, within the Small Business Administration Act, H.R. 2633.
In 1988, more than 1 in 4 small business owners lived in rural areas. By 2016, that number fell to less than 1 in 6. Despite the decline, the rate of small business employment has remained higher in rural areas of the United States.
The mission of the Small Business Administration (SBA) is to: protect the interests of small businesses, preserve free competitive enterprise, and strengthen the overall economy of our nation. However, in light of recent statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau
and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), it’s clear the SBA is failing to protect, preserve, and strengthen rural America’s small businesses.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 60 million Americans live in rural America. Our nation’s small business owners and rural communities are clearly not receiving the proper government support they need to grow their businesses. It is our responsibility
as legislators to find solutions and sponsor legislation that will provide small businesses with the necessary tools to succeed.
Congress wrote and passed legislation to establish an Office of Rural Affairs in 1990, under the management of the SBA, however this office no longer exists. It is critical that we address the elimination of such an important office within the Small Business
I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this legislation that would require the Small Business Administration to submit a report on the Office of Rural Affairs no later than six months after its enactment analyzing the cost and potential benefits of creating
a successor to the Office.
I hope that you consider joining me in introducing this important piece of legislation and I look forward to hearing from you and your staff. For more information or to add your name as a cosponsor, please contact Nandini Narayan of my staff at
