Dear Colleague:

The passage of the Equality Act in the House is a historic step towards full LGBTQ equality, but there is still work to be done to stop discrimination.  While the Equality Act codifies protections against workplace discrimination such as wrongful termination
on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, LGBTQ Americans are still be vulnerable to pay discrimination.

A 2018 survey from LendingTree showed that, on average, LGBTQ people make less money than non-LGBTQ people, with more than half of LGBTQ respondents reporting wages of

less than $50,000 per year
. Transgender women of color especially face some of the most significant financial workplace hardships.[1]

My bill will guarantee equal for every American – regardless of who they are or who they love- by amending the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to expand the definition of sex to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.”

The Supreme Court earlier this year agreed to hear three cases dealing with LGBTQ discrimination.  We cannot solely rely on the Court’s interpretation of current law to ensure all Americans have a fair chance to earn a living, can build lives without fear
of discrimination, and are treated equally.  It’s Congress’s job to act. We need equal pay for all Americans.
