Sending Office: Honorable Lois Frankel
Since May 2018, Saudi Arabia has arrested prominent women’s rights advocates and imposed travel bans on numerous others, many of them longtime supporters of ending the ban on women driving and abolishing the male guardianship system. On November 20, 2018,
the Washington Post
reported that multiple imprisoned Saudi women’s rights activists had been subjected to psychological and physical abuse, including sexual violence, beatings, electric shocks, and sleep deprivation.
Now is the time for the United States to speak up for the protection of human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia and to call for an end to the growing suppression of their women’s rights movement.
We hope that you will join us in urging Saudi officials to immediately release the imprisoned women’s rights advocates and hold accountable those involved in perpetrating alleged abuses.
