21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps
Current cosponsors: Barbara Lee, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mark Pocan
Original cosponsor deadline: Thursday, April 25th @ 2:00pm
As we just celebrated Earth Day, I invite you to cosponsor the “21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps Act,” a bill that would reinvent and reestablish the successful program of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal efforts. The original Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) ran from 1933 to 1942 and was responsible for planting nearly 3 billion trees, constructing over 800 parks, and building countless miles of public roadways in remote areas. The Corps boosted the economy, provided work for young unemployed
men, and increased Americans awareness of our nation’s environmental treasures.
The 21st Century Civilian Corps Act aims to establish a similar initiative to combat widespread unemployment and address the depletion of America’s natural resources. Members of the Corps will engage in prevention of forest fires, floods and soil
erosion, reforestation, eradication of invasive species and flora disease control, and modernize, redesign, and construct trails and facilities throughout our nation’s natural spaces. The goal is to create thousands of jobs a year for unemployed or underemployed
citizens, giving preference to unemployed veterans of the Armed Forces. With a focus on creating as many jobs as possible, no less than 80 percent of the program’s funds will be utilized to provide for employment opportunities.
The original CCC was immensely successful and popular. Let us once again effectuate a positive increase in public appreciation of nature and confidence in the government, by positioning another generation for a CCC experience. I invite you to join me in
co-sponsoring the 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps Act.
