TODAY: Lunch Briefing on the Equal Rights Amendment
Friday, March 15th
11:30am – 12:30pm
2247 Rayburn House Office Building
Lunch will be provided for attendees
We wanted to draw your attention to an invitation you should have already received from the ERA Coalition. In honor of Women’s History Month, the ERA Coalition cordially invite you and your staff to attend a briefing on the Equal Rights Amendment. The Equal
Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution that would expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. The Constitution does not guarantee full and equal rights for women and our legislation will help change that.
The essential language of the Equal Rights Amendment is simple, yet powerful:
Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
The Equal Rights Amendment is needed both as a legal tool and a statement of principle. Sex discrimination continues to limit equal opportunity and justice for women. Economic inequality, pregnancy discrimination, violence against women,
and other forms of discrimination against women and girls are pervasive and current law leaves women without effective legal recourse. State laws are not uniform and federal laws are not comprehensive. Moreover, even crucial laws can be rolled back anytime,
and in some cases, have been. The ERA would constitutionally solidify women’s place in our country, and establish that gender equality in an American value.
Confirmed speakers for the March 15th briefing include the following experts:
- Carol Jenkins, CEO and Co-President of the ERA Coalition
- Delegate Hala Ayala, 51st District of the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Linda Coberly, Chicago Managing Partner at Winston & Strawn, LLC; Chair of the ERA Coalition Legal Task Force
- Kate Kelly, International Human Rights Attorney at Equality Now
- Bettina Hager (moderator), DC Director and COO of the ERA Coalition
We hope you are able to participate in this important briefing to discuss the dire need of constitutional equality for women, and have your questions answered about what remains on the path to ratification. Please contact Bettina Hager with the
ERA Coalition at firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP.
