Dear Colleague:

I ask you to support full funding for programs within the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in the FY 2020 appropriations by signing the letter below addressed to the Transportation-HUD Appropriations Subcommittee.

Public transportation in the United States is a crucial part of the solution to the nation’s economic, energy, and environmental challenges — helping to bring a better quality of life.  In increasing numbers, Americans people are using public transportation
and local communities are expanding public transit services.  Americans living in areas served by public transportation save 865 million hours in travel time and 450 million gallons of fuel annually in congestion reduction alone.  The Texas A&M Transportation
Institute’s 2015 Urban Mobility report found that congestion costs commuters $160 billion in wasted time and fuel in 2014, or an average of $960 per commuter. If the status quo continues, it is estimated that congestion costs will grow from $160 billion to
$192 billion in 2020, adjusted for inflation.

Public transportation not only saves time, money and fuel, but— it also creates jobs.  The American Public Transportation Association estimates that for every $1 billion invested in public transit, 36,000 jobs are created or supported.  These jobs are good-paying
jobs providing services that also benefit our communities by getting more cars off the road, lessening the demand for fossil fuel, and affordably connecting workers with employers.

I hope that you will join me in supporting full funding for programs within the Federal Transit Administration.  If you have any questions please contact Kate McCann at or 6-6715.
