I write to invite you to cosponsor H.R. 677, the “21st Century President Act” which would amend federal law to recognize that persons other than men can be President, and presidential spouses don’t have to be wives.
In 2020, for the first time in history, we may have more women who are presidential candidates than men. And following the Supreme Court’s recognition of marriage equality in 2015, a future President may have a spouse of the same sex. It is important that
federal law recognize this reality. That is why I have introduced the “21st Century President Act” which replaces the terms “wife” and “widow” with “spouse” and replaces gender-specific pronouns referring to the President and presidential spouses
with gender-neutral terms. Without this change in law, 18 U.S.C. 879 – which makes it a crime to threaten to kill, kidnap, or inflict bodily harm upon the President or the President’s family – would fall far short of the Constitution’s promise of equal protection
under the law.
If you wish to cosponsor a piece of legislation whose time has come, I urge you to join me in support of this measure. I am happy to answer any questions you may have, and your staff may contact Kate Huffman of my staff at (202) 225-2906 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
