Dear Colleague:

March is National Women’s History Month. Please join in honoring the increased awareness and knowledge of women’s involvement in history by cosponsoring the bipartisan National Women’s History Month resolution. This year’s theme honors women who have led
efforts to end war, violence, and injustice and pioneered the use of nonviolence to change society.

Until the late 1970’s, women’s history was rarely included in K-12 curriculum and was virtually absent in public awareness. To counter this, the Education Taskforce of Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration
in 1978, centered on International Women’s History Day. In 1981, Congress responded to the growing popularity of Women’s History Week by making it a national observance and eventually expanding the week to a month in 1987.

The popularity of women’s history celebrations in thousands of communities across the United States has sparked a new interest in uncovering women’s forgotten heritage. This year, National Women’s History Month celebrates “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace
and Nonviolence.” Please honor women and their history, as well as the women you work with side-by-side every day by becoming a cosponsor of this resolution.

For more information or to cosponsor, please contact Suzanne Dodge with Rep. Mike Thompson at to be an original cosponsor is February 28.
