Dear Colleague,

I invite you to cosponsor legislation to specifically authorize $50 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the purpose of gun violence research.

The November election gave democrats the majority of seats in the House of Representatives for the first time in 8 years, and with it, the opportunity to advance the priorities close the hearts of the American people.

Few of these priorities are more necessary to the safety and security of our families and communities than common sense gun safety reform. Through our marches, town halls, walkouts, and protests, there is real energy in this country to break the NRA stranglehold
on our politics and bring meaningful reform to this country.

Gun violence is a national epidemic that has claimed the lives of over 13,000 Americans in 2018 and injured more than 26,000 others. We need our nation’s best minds, best researchers to study the causes and characteristics of gun violence so we can have
the best strategies to prevent future tragedies.

In March of last year, congress passed an omnibus spending bill that repealed the federal ban on gun violence research and increased the budget for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

This is a major victory and a change that I have been working toward for years. Now we need to make sure this research starts and that the Department of Health and Human Services puts it money where its mouth is.

That is why on January 17th, I will be reintroducing my bill with Senator Markey to specifically authorize $50 million per year for 5 fiscal years to the CDC for the purpose of conducting this life saving research.

Lives are literally at stake, we have no time to lose. We need to get this research going NOW.

For more information or to cosponsor this legislation, please contact Max Whitcomb ( in my office.
