Sending Office: Honorable Joe Wilson
Cosponsor H. Res. 12 to Reaffirm Jewish Connection to Jerusalem
Last week, the United States and Israel formally withdrew from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in protest of the organization’s bias against the State of Israel. UNESCO has a long track record passing resolutions
unfairly singling out the Jewish State as well as minimizing or erasing the connection of the Jewish people to the city of Jerusalem for political purposes.
It is clear that UNESCO has devolved into a platform for anti-Semitic attacks against the Jewish State. The resolutions released by UNESCO are clearly one-sided: they refer to locations within Israel as “occupied Palestine” and regularly diminish Jewish
spiritual and historical links to sites that have had a Jewish identity for over 3,000 years, like the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the Old City of Jerusalem.
H. Res. 12 reaffirms the connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, as confirmed by scientific, archaeological, and historical evidence, and condemns any past, present, or future efforts at UNESCO to delegitimize Israel through attempts to rewrite and
deny the history of Jerusalem. The resolution expresses support for the US and Israeli decision to withdraw from UNESCO and encourages the U.S. to continue working with UNESCO member states to prevent future biased resolutions.
