Sending Office: Honorable Linda T. Sanchez
I write today to seek your support for the Financial Accountability in Reporting (FAIR) Act. This bill would require presidents to file a financial disclosure within the same time frame as newly elected Members of Congress and their senior
The Office of Government Ethics (OGE) does not require the President of the United States to file a financial disclosure in his first year of service because he filed the year prior as a candidate. However, newly elected Members of Congress file by May 15th
of their first year despite also having filed as a candidate. Although not required, Presidents have historically filed financial disclosures within the first few months of their administrations. President Trump has released his financial disclosures, however
given the perpetual uncertainty as to whether he will decide to play by the rules on a given day, the FAIR Act ensures that this level of transparency is a requirement of the Presidency.
Specifically, this bill would clarify the Ethics in Government Act to require that the President-elect file a financial disclosure by May 15th of his or her first year in office.
I hope you will join me in cosponsoring the FAIR Act. No elected official, not even the President of the United States, should be above accountability and transparency to the American people. If you have any questions, or would like to cosponsor, please
reach out to Meghan McConnell in my office at
Meghan.McConnell@mail.house.gov, or at x56676.
