Please join me as an original co-sponsor of the Refugee Sanitation Facility Safety Act of 2019, which would make restrooms in refugee camps safer for women and girls.
Refugees awaiting resettlement have fled war, violence and persecution. While refugee camps are intended to be temporary spaces, they have become protracted and often dangerous homes. Refugees often find that they have been followed by the very violence
and insecurity that caused them to flee their home countries in the first place. Women and girls, in particular, face high levels of sexual assault, and the infrastructure of camps fails to protect against these already vulnerable populations.
Refugee camps around the world do not provide safe and secure access to sanitation facilities and those that exist are often mixed-sex, public, and without locks or well-lit paths. According to
Amnesty International, women are at a greater risk of experiencing sexual assault and violence if they do not have separate
bathrooms. Many women and girls so fear using the bathroom at night that they develop urinary tract infections, are forced to relieve themselves in their tents, or are unable to change their clothes for weeks. Refugee camps have failed to provide common-sense
solutions to protect refugees from sexual assault in sanitation facilities. This legislation seeks to remedy that problem.
If you would like to join this legislation, please do not hesitate to contact me. Your staff may contact Katharine Nasielski of my staff at
