Sending Office: Honorable Ralph Lee Abraham
I urge you to cosponsor and support H.R. 5499, the Stephen Michael Gleason Congressional Gold Medal Act. This legislation would honor a truly courageous and inspirational American, awarding Steve Gleason with the Congressional Gold Medal.
Steve provided one of the most inspirational and memorable plays in the history of the New Orleans Saints and the NFL when he blocked a punt in the Saints’ first game in the Superdome after the city had been struck by Hurricane Katrina. The play provided
the spark for the Saints to beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-3 and helped kindle the great spirit to return and rebuild.
Following his NFL career, Steve was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2011. Always a fighter, Steve worked to advocate and help others with ALS by creating “Team Gleason” with his wife, Michel. Team Gleason has passionately helped those
with ALS and other neuromuscular diseases by providing those in need with the medical technology and equipment that they need to continue to live their lives to the fullest. Team Gleason is also committed to expanding research and keeping the search for a
cure strong. Steve has been an enduring and inspiring leader for those affected by ALS and by all American’s who know his story.
On June 14, the Senate passed its version of this bill by unanimous consent. Please join me and the 55 other cosponsors in supporting the House version and honoring a true American who has done so much for others.
For more information, feel free to reach out to Allen Cambon in my office at 5-8940 or contact Peter Hunter in Rep. Richmond’s office at
Peter.Hunter@mail.house.gov to cosponsor.
