Support Hacking for Defense and the MD5 National Security Technology Accelerator

November 15, 2018

Please join our bipartisan, bicameral effort to support
Hacking for Defense (H4D) and the MD5 National Security Technology Accelerator (MD5).  H4D is a university course developed by U.S. military combat veterans and taught at universities around the country in which students apply cutting-edge
research and problem-solving techniques to real-world security problems provided by Defense and Intelligence Agencies. MD5, which oversees H4D, is a DOD program that brings civilians, military personnel, and academics together to apply lean startup methodology
to rapidly solve challenging national security problems.

Co-Sponsor the Diverse Small Businesses Empowerment Act

November 15, 2018

While women, veterans, and minorities represent the largest share of new small business start-ups in the country, they still face tremendous institutional barriers. To help address this problem, I am introducing legislation to cut the upfront fees for certain
small business loans, making it easier for small business start-ups to access the loans without paying high guarantee fees.

and service to our nation stand as a testament to our founding principles.

I write to request your consideration and cosponsorship of legislation to raise wages at large, profitable corporations that pay poverty-level wages. This bill will be introduced later this week and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will be dropping companion

Cosponsor the Security and Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Act to Support Workplace Protections for Domestic Violence Victims

November 15, 2018

One in four women and one in nine men have suffered physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner, which has a devastating impact on a survivor’s physical and emotional health. Often forgotten when we talk about victims of intimate partner violence,
sexual assault, stalking, and revenge pornography, is the severe economic impact this abuse can have on victims. It can cost victims their jobs, their homes, their health, and their insurance – and, in cases of domestic violence, reinforce their dependency
on their abusers as a result. Abusers often use economic necessities like rent, health care, and child care to exert control over their victims. And victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and revenge pornography often find that abuse
and threats follow them from home into the workplace – each year, they lose nearly eight million days of paid work—the equivalent of more than 32,000 full-time jobs.

Ask FDA to Finalize Guidance for ALS and Right to Try

November 15, 2018

We have made great strides in treating many life-threatening diseases, but treatment for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) has lagged behind.  Unfortunately, this rare but devastating disease is fast-acting once diagnosed and affords little opportunity for study.
Families are often left scrambling to adapt and have little time to advocate for federal policy changes.  Yet I, and many of my colleagues, have had the opportunity to get to know victims and their families, and it’s up to us to advocate on their behalf.
Fortunately, there are opportunities to make a difference.
