Dear Colleague:
We write to ask for your support of H.R. 5879, the Merchant Mariners of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act. This bill awards the Congressional Gold Medal to Merchant Mariners who served during World War II in honor of their
dedicated and vital service to the nation.
The Merchant Marine proved instrumental in providing for the efficient and reliable international transport of military and civilian personnel as well as combat equipment, fuel, food, commodities, and raw materials that were essential for military success.
These mariners put their lives on the line for this country, selflessly answering the nation’s call to duty. Risking their lives to provide the needed supplies and personnel for the war, the Merchant Marine suffered a higher per capita casualty rate than any
other branch of the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.
Unfortunately, their sacrifice is commonly overlooked. Hundreds of Mariner ships and thousands of men were lost to enemy combatants during the course of World War II. It’s time that we give these courageous Mariners the recognition they have earned with
the Congressional Gold Medal.
