Sending Office: Honorable John A. Yarmuth
According to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 36 million American adults lack the basic literacy and numeracy skills necessary to succeed at home, in the workplace, and in society. These same individuals experience
higher unemployment rates and lower wages, making it harder for them to support their families. Adult education helps Americans gain the skills they need to become employed, advance in their jobs, engage in postsecondary and training programs, and achieve
Adult education also supports family literacy and encourages participation in children’s education since parents are the “first teacher” of their child. The educational skills of parents, and the practice of reading to a child, have a direct impact on the
educational success of their children. Family education encourages increased literacy, family engagement, and positive academic outcomes.
To highlight the need to ensure that each individual in the United States has the literacy skills necessary to succeed, we are introducing a resolution to designate the week of September 23-29, 2018 as “National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week”
and bring awareness to the importance of adult and family education.
As co-chairs of the Adult Literacy Caucus, we hope you will cosponsor this resolution and join us in this effort to showcase the importance of adult education. To cosponsor this resolution, please contact Erica DiCio (email@example.com
or 5-5401) in Congressman Yarmuth’s office or Alex Mackey (firstname.lastname@example.org or 5-6356) in Congressman Roe’s office.
