Dear Colleague,
Please join us as an original cosponsor of the Get the Lead Out of Schools Act, a bill which requires the EPA to establish a lead contamination testing program for all schools and creates a grant program to help school districts conduct
lead testing and assist with remediation efforts.
As you may know, there is no federal law requiring the testing of drinking water in schools. A recent GAO report found that 57% of U.S. school districts did not test their water or did not know whether they had tested their water for lead. This nationwide
problem has affected school districts across the country.
On August 28, 2018, the Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District ordered the water to be shut off at all 106 schools in the district after water testing revealed elevated levels of lead. The source of lead was not the Detroit water supply,
but rather the schools’ crumbling infrastructure.
When we send our children to school, we expect them to have a healthy and safe learning environment. This bill takes the first step towards ensuring our children have access to safe drinking water and that schools are testing for contaminants in their infrastructure.
To cosponsor this bill, please contact Alex Huang (Alex.Huang@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Lawrence’s office.
Sincerely,
Brenda L. Lawrence Mike Quigley
