Dear Colleague:

I am writing to invite you to cosponsor a resolution which recognizes the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and highlights the devastating effects domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities in the United States.

The presence of domestic violence continues to be a serious problem throughout this country, affecting people of all ages as well as racial, ethnic, gender, economic, and religious backgrounds. Women are disproportionately victims of this type of violence, as
one in four women will experience domestic violence at some point in her life.

The devastating effects of domestic violence include physical injury, psychological trauma, or in some cases even death. Of employed domestic violence victims, 96 percent experience problems at work due to abuse and many domestic violence victims report
that this violence has been a factor in job loss.

Victims have also reported trouble in securing housing. Some landlords deny housing to victims who have protection orders or evict victims of domestic violence for seeking help after a domestic violence incident.

In houses where domestic violence is present, children are also at risk. At least 15,500,000 children in the United States live in families in which partner violence occurred at least once in the past year. Children exposed to domestic violence are more
likely to attempt suicide, abuse drugs and alcohol, run away from home, or become a victim of human trafficking.

Committing to raising awareness and supporting programs designed to end domestic violence is essential to ending the prevalence of domestic violence in the United States. We must continue to support programs designed to intervene and prevent domestic violence. To
become a co-sponsor, please contact Bobby Bivens in Congressman Al Green’s office at 5-7508 or
