Sending Office: Committee on the Budget
Sent By:

August 31, 2018
Dear Colleague,
We invite you to join the House Budget Committee for an open house with the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). This event will provide an opportunity for congressional staff to engage directly with CBO’s leadership and senior analysts. The Committee encourages
all congressional staff to attend and ask questions about CBO’s processes, including for providing cost estimates.
The open house will take place on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at 9:00 AM in room 1334 of the Longworth House Office Building.
As defined in the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974, the “primary duty and function” of CBO is to serve the House and Senate Budget Committees, in particular to provide objective, nonpartisan information that supports the budget
process. The upcoming open house will allow staff to engage in the ongoing conversation regarding CBO’s mission, work products, and transparency efforts.
The event schedule is as follows:
9:00 am – 9:15 am: Opening Remarks and Introductions
9:15 am – 9:45 am: CBO 101 Presentation (including how to request and interpret a cost estimate)
9:45 am – 12:00 pm: Open House
The Committee also encourages staff to bring cost estimates that they would like help understanding or legislative proposals if they would like preliminary feedback.  Budget Committee staff are also available at any time to assist in understanding
House budgetary rules and CBO’s scoring.
This open house with CBO is designed to allow staff to come and go as they please. However, congressional IDs are necessary to enter the room, as this event is not open to the public. To RSVP, please contact Ben Gardenhour with the Committee’s majority
staff at
If you have any questions regarding the event or CBO’s role in the congressional budget process, please reach out to Brittany Madni with the Committee’s majority staff at, or Laura Santos with the Committee’s minority staff
We look forward to hosting you.
