Sending Office: Honorable Matt Gaetz
I urge a YES VOTE on my amendment (#25) to HR 200.
Over the last several years, the lionfish has infiltrated our waters, reproducing at alarming rates, and devouring our native fish. In turn, not only is our native fish population severely harmed, but so are our coral reefs.
Over the course of one year, a single female lionfish releases 2 million eggs. Additionally, stomach content tests have shown us that a mature lionfish can eat up to 65 native fish in one feeding. Unfortunately, this invasive species has very few predators
in our part of the world, and is only flourishing.
To help bring an end to this problem, I invite you to vote YES on my amendment to HR 200. This amendment will incentivize humans to kill these predators and in turn, protect our natural habitats. In states that choose to participate in this program,
divers and fisherman will turn in 100 lionfish tails in exchange for one fishing tag for a desirable native fish. The lionfish may be used for triggerfish, amberjack, red snapper, or gag grouper in compliance with all federal size requirements. These lionfish
may be killed in either state or federal waters; and the exchanged tags may be used for fish in federal waters regardless of season.
