Sending Office: Honorable Raja Krishnamoorthi
Deadline 4pm Today!
Original Cosponsors: Frederica Wilson
Since late 2016, we have seen a startling uptick in violence and harassment rooted in hatred and bigotry. For 2017, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) found that the number of hate groups rose to 954 from 917 the prior yar, up 4 percent. At the same
time, we’ve seen members of the federal government actively supporting extremist views. Extremist domestic terrorism represents a singular threat to American national security and our democratic ideals, yet hate groups continue to gain a foothold in public
life and public service.
I invite you to join me as an original cosponsor of the No Security Clearance for Hate Groups Act. This legislation would require the FBI, in coordination with other federal agencies, to establish and maintain a list of hate groups operating
in the United States, including those that attack and malign people based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Additionally, this legislation would require the head of each federal agency or department submit an annual report to Congress on the number of individuals seeking a security clearance who are affiliated with a hate group, including those who are denied
and those who received such clearances.
The American people deserve to know how hate groups may be affecting the public policy of their government and compromising the security of our nation. Please join me in supporting this common-sense measure.
