Dear Colleague,

I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor of H.R. 1982, “Mental Health Access and Gun Violence Prevention Act of 2017.”

H.R. 1982 authorizes Fiscal Year 2018 appropriations for the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Social Security Administration to increase
access to mental health care treatment and services, and promote reporting of mental health information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

In America, the leading cause of gun related violence is suicide. Over 60 percent of deaths by guns are the result of individuals using these guns to commit suicide. If there
were adequate background checks, some of these deaths might have been prevented.

Guns and domestic abuse together are often a deadly combination. Victims of domestic abuse are 5 times more likely to become victims of homicide when a gun is present in the
household. Victims of domestic abuse who suffer from mental illness are more likely to be victims, rather than perpetrators, of violence.

Less than half of the Americans with diagnosable mental health problems receive the treatment they need. H.R. 1982 authorizes an increase of funding to improve access to mental
health care treatment to ultimately reduce gun violence.

I urge you to support this effort to improve our mental health care system so we can ultimately reduce gun violence, and co-sponsor H.R. 1982. Accordingly, please contact Lillie
Coney at Lillie.Coney@mail.house.gov or call 202-225-3816 to co-sponsor this legislation.

Very Truly Yours,
Sheila Jackson Lee
Member of Congress
