Cosponsor the Bipartisan H. Res. 910

Help End Global Violence Against Children

Dear Colleague,

We invite you to join us as a cosponsor of H. Res. 910, which condemns violence against children globally and encourages the development of a strategy for preventing, addressing, and ending violence against children and youth globally.

According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion children worldwide are exposed to violence in their homes and society at-large.  Violence against children takes many forms, including physical, sexual, and mental violence, neglect or negligent
treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, harm or abuse – and is often categorized as:

Commercial sexual exploitation

  • Trafficking
  • Child labor
  • Violence in schools
  • Female genital mutilation/cutting
  • Child Marriage
  • Violent conflict and displacement

Currently, only 0.5 percent of all U.S. development aid is allocated for projects that aim to end such violence, and the consequences to public health, economic growth, and future development are enormous. The global economic impact resulting from physical,
psychological, and sexual violence against children is estimated to be as high as $7 trillion, or eight percent of the world’s GDP.

Violence against children undermines our development efforts across sectors and across the globe.  It results in long-term exposure to toxic stress and is known to inhibit optimal brain development. This irreversible impact on the young developing brain
can lead to a failure to thrive among affected children and poorer performance once the child enters the educational system. Studies show that adults exposed to violence in childhood have lower levels of education, employment, earnings and assets.

Our bipartisan resolution prioritizes the needs of children and youth who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing violence and promotes government-wide coordination, enhanced methods of monitoring and tracking, and public-private partnerships. It
is a much-needed first step to elevate the United States’ work to end violence against children.

We hope that you will join us in cosponsoring this important resolution and help create a brighter future for children around the world.  To cosponsor the bill, or for further information, please contact Cindy Buhl (Rep. McGovern) at or Oren Adaki (Rep. Poe) at
