Dear Colleague:

You and your staff are invited to join Andreas Schleicher — Director for Education and Skills at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) — for a briefing on how to build a 21st-century school system. Mr. Schleicher is an international
authority on education policy and the creator of the world-renowned
PISA
study. He has accompanied education leaders in more than 70 countries in their efforts to design and implement forward-looking policies and practices.

The biggest risk to schooling today isn’t inefficiency, but the loss of purpose and relevance in a rapidly changing global economy. Students growing up with a great smartphone but a poor education will face unprecedented risks. Content knowledge and routine
cognitive skills – like memorizing our multiplication tables and vocabulary lists – was rightly at the center of education for many years. But today, Google knows everything, and the world no longer rewards you for what you know—but for what you can do with
what you know.

The questions below are at the center of the education policy research carried out by the OECD, the intergovernmental economic research and advisory body founded by the United States and other like-minded nations in 1961.

  • What are the skills required for students to succeed in the modern economy?
  • What makes school systems successful at delivering these skills?
  • What is it that makes high-performing school systems different?
  • And how can policy makers confront these challenges?

Please feel free to download a copy of Andreas’ book,
“World Class”
on the OECD website as well as watch Andreas’ TED Talk,
“Use data to build better schools.”
This briefing is open to all congressional staff.

If you have any questions, please contact Jacque Mosely, Director of Education Policy for Democratic staff of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, at
Jacque.mosely@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,

ROBERT C. “BOBBY” SCOTT
