Sending Office: Honorable Elizabeth H. Esty
Cosponsor H.R. 6074, the Combating the Heroin Epidemic Through Forensic Drug Testing Act of 2018
Cosponsors: Esty, MacArthur, Kuster
We invite you to cosponsor our Combating the Heroin Epidemic Through Forensic Drug Testing Act, H.R. 6074, and help forensic labs and medical examiners offices around the country keep up with the tragic toll of the opioid and heroin crisis. As many communities
face unparalleled levels of overdose deaths, state forensic labs and medical examiners offices are struggling to perform their vital work and maintain their accreditation.
Medical and forensic professionals play a vital and often unnoticed role in providing families with clarity and closure during the loss of a loved one. They also inform the work of public health officials and law enforcement with valuable data about the
nature and extent of the drug crisis in a community. That’s why we recently introduced H.R. 6074 to help them maintain their efforts to address this crisis by authorizing grant funding through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program to provide
forensic labs and medical examiner offices with additional resources to pay for staff, equipment, and overtime.
Many of us have listened to our constituents’ tragic stories of the pain addiction has caused their families and in our districts. State and local government officials play a vital role in addressing the opioid and heroin crisis on the ground, and this bill
will ensure forensic professionals and medical examiners can keep pace with their important work and maintain their accreditation.
If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a cosponsor of H.R. 6074, the Combating the Heroin Epidemic Through Forensic Drug Testing Act, please contact
