Sending Office: Honorable Elizabeth H. Esty
Cosponsor H.R. 5992, the Student and Student Athlete Opioid Misuse Prevention Act
We invite you to cosponsor our recently introduced legislation, the Student and Student Athlete Opioid Misuse Prevention Act, to expand youth-focused addiction prevention programs. As the opioid and heroin crisis continues to devastate communities across
our country, young people are at unique risk for misusing medication and developing addiction. Young people often have their first exposure to opioids after a sports injury or common surgery such as wisdom tooth removal. But too often we leave students and
student athletes insufficiently informed to understand the proper use of pain medication and the risk of addiction.
This legislation would authorize the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use to provide $10 million annually to support prevention programs for students and student athletes, as well as training for teachers, administrators, trainers, coaches,
and athletic directors, specifically targeted at mitigating the risk of opioid misuse and overdose. The Surgeon General’s report
Facing Addiction in America found that prevention programs are effective and cost-effective across age ranges.
