President Trump’s executive order opens the door for indefinite detention of families fleeing violence in their home countries. In order to handle this massive increase in family detention, the order directs the Secretary of Defense to make space and facilities
available to build family detention camps on military bases.
I have introduced an amendment to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act to prohibit the use of any federal defense funding for family immigration detention centers on Department of Defense property or in any way comply with Executive Order 13841,
“Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation.”
American taxpayers should not be footing the bill for President Trump’s expensive and misguided attempts to build internment camps across the United States, and we certainly should not be using our nation’s military bases for non-defense purposes. This amendment
makes it clear that the American military will not be charged with enforcing domestic immigration policies, and that internment camps have no business in the United States.
Please join me in supporting this common-sense measure.
