Sending Office: Honorable Mike Thompson
Preventable Burn Injuries and Flame Arrestors
Thursday, June 21
10:00 am – 11:00 am
421 Cannon House Office Building
I am pleased to invite you and your staff to attend an important briefing on the critical role flame arrestors can play in preventing devastating burn injuries.
Unprotected vapors from flammable liquids near a flame or ignition source can ignite, causing vapor explosions or flashback fire explosions in a container of burning fuel. A flame arrestor, a mesh or a thin barrier that allows liquid to pass through but
prevents the passage of flame, can prevent this by acting as a barrier and inhibiting flame propagation in containers of flammable liquids.
Unfortunately, there is no requirement that flame mitigation devices be implemented in fuel containers used in homes, labs and schools across the country. Accidents have caused devastating injuries and deaths.
This is a serious public safety concern, and that is why I have introduced H.R. 919, the Portable Fuel Container Safety Act of 2017. This bill would direct the Consumer Product Safety Commission to promulgate rules for flame mitigation devices in portable
fuel containers for flammable liquids.
If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please contact Vernon Baker III in my office at (202) 225-3311 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
