I urge you to join me as an original cosponsor of the Duty to Report Act
and help protect our elections from foreign interference.
The Trump family has acknowledged that Russia offered secret “dirt” on Donald Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Mr. Trump, Jr. was told Russia was offering him this information as part of its
support for his father’s candidacy. Instead of reacting with concern or alarm that a foreign power was trying to meddle in a domestic U.S. election, Mr. Trump, Jr. said he would “love” to get his hands on this information; he and his colleagues – then-Trump
Campaign Manager Paul Manafort and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner – later met with the Russian representatives to do so.
There are other occasions in which similar red flags about Russia were raised, including one involving George Papadopoulos. He was too was told that Russia had “dirt” on former Secretary Clinton, in this case in the form of “thousands of emails.” And like
other Trump campaign staff and family, he failed to alert anyone that our election could be targeted by Russia. Such conduct cannot be allowed to repeat itself.
Had anyone altered law enforcement about these red flags we could have perhaps discovered Russia’s election influence efforts much earlier. And, we should make a statement that future foreign attempts to influence our elections will not be tolerated.
That is why I plan to introduce the Duty to Report Act. This bill would make it a crime for candidates, their immediate families, or people involved with their campaigns to fail to notify the FBI if any of them are told about, offered, or receive
in an unsolicited way nonpublic, materially significant information about another person running for the same office they know or recklessly disregard the fact that the source is a foreign power or agent of a foreign power.
Let us make clear to other countries that it will be reported to law enforcement if you try to play games in our elections by developing secret information about one candidate for another. Join me as a cosponsor of the
Duty to Report Act and stand up for U.S. elections free from foreign interference. If you would like to be an original cosponsor, or if you have any questions, please contact Sarah Kaplan Feinmann at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Deadline to be an original is Thursday, June 7.
