Infants, Toddlers and Families in the Opioid Crisis:
A Busy Intersection on the Road to Well-Being
June 7, 2018 3 – 4 pm Rayburn 2103
There are an estimated 2.1 million Americans grappling with opioid addiction.
A recent study found that opioid use among pregnant women increased significantly between 2004 and 2013, particularly in rural areas that saw a 600% increase. Consequently, the number of children born
with neonatal abstinence syndrome has increased dramatically. A child is born with neonatal abstinence syndrome every 15 minutes.
Traditionally, when infants are born with neonatal abstinence syndrome they are sent to an intensive-care unit, costing hospitals an estimated $1.5 billion. After their release, many parents must grapple with managing their own addiction while supporting
their child’s unique health needs.
Please join the bipartisan Baby Caucus for a briefing addressing the ongoing challenges with supporting parents and children impacted by opioid addiction featuring the following panelists:
Dr. Kaitlan E Baston
Medical Director of Addiction Medicine at Cooper University
The Honorable Joseph W. Seidlin
Judge, Iowan District Court 5C
Polk County, IA
Dr. Rebecca Vivrette
Assistant Professor, Psychiatry
University of Maryland School of Medicine
College Park, MD
We hope you will join us and learn more about this important issue.
