Sending Office: Veasey, Marc A.
Today in America, nearly two-thirds of adults and one in three children are overweight or obese. Not only do these statistics affect the health and well-being of each individual, but they are a burden on our country as a whole. The high obesity rate has
contributed to the pervasiveness of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases that drain resources from our healthcare system. Increases in food intake, lack of physical activity, and environments that make nutritious choices more difficult have
all played a role in this obesity epidemic.
We must pledge to reverse course, and help increase the quality and years of healthy life for millions of Americans. This is why I introduced H. Res. 302 to designate May as “Health and Fitness Month.” By dedicating the month of May to health and fitness,
we can show that there are steps everyone can take to lead healthier lives.
I invite you to come out to the event to learn about ways to promote healthy living in your district. In addition, throughout this month, I will be participating in other events, both in Washington and back in the 33rd Congressional District of Texas, that
showcase how we all can live healthier lifestyles. Healthy lifestyle events can include activities like:
- A community walk
- Nutritious cooking lessons for children and their families
- Educational events on proper nutritional intake
- Fitness days with elementary school children
In 2010, the Surgeon General proclaimed, “Good nutrition, regular physical activity, and stress management significantly contribute to achieving optimal health. By practicing these healthy lifestyle behaviors, excess weight is prevented, weight loss is sustained,
and strength and endurance are achieved. This is the reward we need to communicate to the American public.
Please join me on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in the Rayburn Foyer to learn more about healthy living and to celebrate Health and Fitness Month. Let’s promote a healthy lifestyle for all Americans so we can live a longer and more prosperous
life. For more information or to sign-on, please contact Nicole Varner in my office at 5-9897 (Nicole.Varner@mail.house.gov).
