Dear Colleague,

We invite you to join the Spina Bifida Caucus to support individuals living with this condition. The Caucus serves to promote the prevention of Spina Bifida and enhance the lives of all affected.

Spina Bifida – a neural tube defect (NTD) – is the nation’s most common permanently disabling birth defect which adversely impacts virtually every organ system. On average, there are an estimated eight babies born with a NTD every day. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) calculates that there are approximately 3,000 NTD births each year, of which an estimated 1,500 are Spina Bifida. These children join the ranks of an estimated 166,000 individuals already living with all forms of Spina Bifida in
needing ongoing, life-long comprehensive, quality medical and psychosocial care.

As Spina Bifida impacts multiple organ systems, providing health care to affected individuals is complex and involves different clinical specialists. Thanks to advances in diagnostic equipment, testing, and other medical breakthroughs, people with Spina
Bifida are living much longer than in previous generations. With this extended lifespan, individuals with Spina Bifida are facing new challenges – including unprecedented medical complications associated with aging and a lack of qualified healthcare providers
capable of treating them.

Past efforts of the Caucus have included securing $2 million in initial federal funding to establish the national program at the CDC. Prior to this milestone, there existed no federal program dedicated to spina bifida.

Please join us in supporting our constituents living with Spina Bifida. For more information or to join the Caucus please contact Marisa Kovacs in Representative Chris Smith’s office by email at
