Sending Office: Honorable Pete Olson
Are you interested in the state of democracy in eastern Europe, in efforts to
counter Russian influence, in how counter-corruption is progressing or in
economic development inside small democracies? If so, we write to invite you to join a staff/intern level briefing hosted by the Congressional Moldova Caucus at
2pm on May 18th in 2322 Rayburn HOB.
Moldova is a small former Soviet state of around 3.6 million people on the edge of the European Union and in close proximity to Russia’s perceived sphere of influence. Moldova’s critical geopolitical location has led to debate within the country between
those seeking increased integration and cooperation with Europe and the West, and others who support stronger ties with President Vladimir Putin’s Russia. The country has also worked in recent years to counter a legacy all too common in eastern Europe of corruption
and mismanagement. It is with that backdrop that Moldova prepares for critical parliamentary elections this year, which will help determine the country’s future into the next decade.
In many ways, this small Eastern European nation is a case study for how countries are working to evolve almost three decades after the Cold War, and we have brought together leading experts on Eastern Europe to discuss why the events of 2018 in
Moldova will matter well beyond its borders.
Speakers will include:
Senior staff from the National Democratic Institute
Senior staff from the International Republican Institute
Former Ambassador John Herbst from the Atlantic Council
