Support Independent Living: Cosponsor the Bipartisan Care Corps Demonstration Act (H.R. 3493)
By 2030, there will be more than 72 million older Americans over the age of 65, making up 19% of the total population. As they age, many of these seniors will require long-term supports and services, placing a huge burden on a fragmented system that is already
struggling to provide and finance care for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Studies have shown that most Americans in need of these services prefer to receive care in the home, but we face a shortage of professional caregivers, and family
caregivers cannot do it alone.
Our bill, the Care Corps Demonstration Act (H.R. 3493), would help to fill those gaps and provide opportunity for young adults and others seeking to start or further their careers in this field. It would create a demonstration program to help address caregiving
needs and give volunteers the experience of working with seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities across the country. Corps members would receive benefits necessary to sustain them during their volunteer period and would be eligible for tuition
assistance or loan repayment upon completion of their assignment.
As a nation, we must take steps to ensure that older Americans and those with disabilities are able to live out their lives in the setting most comfortable and fulfilling for them. To cosponsor this legislation, please contact Elya Taichman at Elya.Taichman@mail.house.gov
in Rep. Lujan Grisham’s office or Henry Yaniz at Henry.Yaniz@mail.house.gov in Rep. Ros-Lehtinen’s office.
