Obstetric fistula is a devastating and preventable condition virtually eradicated in the developed world, but persists in regions with scant access to adequate medical care. More than two million women worldwide suffer from obstetric
fistula, which results from prolonged labor when women lack access to skilled medical assistance during childbirth. In recognition of the International Day to End Fistula, I invite you to attend an important briefing about obstetric fistula and how we can
combat it around the world.
I have introduced H.R. 5068, the Obstetric Fistula Prevention, Treatment, Hope, and Dignity Restoration Act, which would direct U.S. resources toward treating mothers suffering from fistula, preventing future cases through education, and empowering women
to reintegrate into their communities.
During this briefing, leaders in the effort to end obstetric fistula will share the work being done to leave this tragic injury in the past. This briefing is an opportunity to learn about how H.R. 5068 would support multilateral and bilateral organizations
to address the social and economic conditions that allow obstetric fistula to persist.
