Sending Office: Honorable Adam B. Schiff
I invite you to be an original cosponsor of legislation I intend to introduce on Thursday, the Disclosing Official Spending at Presidential Businesses Act.
Since taking office, President Trump has spent 155 days at Trump properties. He has the right to take as much vacation time as he wants,
but every time he visits his hotels or golf courses, it forces White House staff, Secret Service Agents, and other federal officials to travel with him – racking up expenses that directly benefit the first family’s businesses. When officials from the State
Department or other agencies stay in Trump Organization properties, the President’s businesses also profit.
Reporters have uncovered some glaring examples of how the Presidency has become a profit generator for Trump businesses. For example, last year it was revealed the Secret Service spent over $137,000
just on golf carts at Trump golf courses in the first nine months of his presidency. Similarly, the State Department reportedly spent more than $15,000
to book 19 rooms at a Trump property in Vancouver in February 2017. More recently, it was reported that earlier this year, the President’s golf club in Scotland received more than $7,600 for
VIP hotel stays.
The Disclosing Official Spending at Presidential Businesses Act would require that each quarter, the head of each Executive agency submit a report to the Director of the Office of Government Ethics detailing any official expenses at any privately held company
that is owned, either in whole or in part, by the President, or a trust controlled by the President. Any President.
The legislation would not prohibit such expenses, but would instead shine a light on the use of federal dollars that have the effect of enriching the nation’s chief executive and his family.
If you have any questions or would like to add on as a cosponsor, please contact Courtney Fogwell at Courtney.Fogwell@mail.house.gov or 5-4176. Deadline for original cosponsors is Thursday, May
17 at 10:30am.
