Sending Office: Honorable Peter Welch
We invite you to cosponsor H.R.3891, bipartisan legislation to improve efforts to identify Medicaid fraud and protect those who are served by the program.
Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCUs) operate in 49 States and the District of Columbia to investigate and prosecute Medicaid provider fraud as well as patient abuse or neglect. In Fiscal Year 2017, MFCUs coordinated over 18,000 investigations of Medicaid
fraud and neglect, resulting in the recovery of $1.8 billion and nearly 2,500 convictions. To learn more about MFCU efforts in your state, click
While MFCUs play an important role in fighting fraud, outdated and unnecessary federal regulations restrict their ability to go after violations in all settings. Currently, MFCUs are only allowed to use federal funds to investigate patient abuse or neglect
complaints at healthcare facilities receiving Medicaid payments. H.R. 3891 broadens the permissible use of funds and allows MFCUs a wider scope to conduct investigations. Last month 49 state Attorneys General signed a
letter in support of this legislation.
We hope you will join us in supporting these commonsense reforms to ensure states can protect patients in need by cracking down on fraudulent actors.
