Sending Office: Honorable Carolyn B. Maloney
Cosponsor H.R. 5068, Obstetric Fistula Prevention, Treatment, Hope and Dignity Restoration Act
According to the World Health Organization, more than two million women worldwide suffer from obstetric fistula, a devastating and preventable condition which results from prolonged labor without proper medical attention. During delivery, the infant’s head
presses against the woman’s pelvis for so long that the tissue dies and a hole develops between the woman’s vagina and rectum, leaving the woman without control of her bladder or bowels and often resulting in the death of the infant. Sadly, women with obstetric
fistula are subjected to social isolation and face divorce or abandonment by their husbands and families because they are considered “unclean.”
I have reintroduced the Obstetric Fistula Prevention, Treatment, Hope, and Dignity Restoration Act (H.R. 4148 in the 114th Congress), comprehensive
legislation to treat mothers suffering from fistula, prevent future cases through education, and empower women to reintegrate into their communities.
This condition has been largely eradicated in Europe and North America over the last century, but due to a lack of access to skilled medical assistance during childbirth, it is all too common in many parts of the developing world. Multilateral organizations
such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and bilateral organizations such as USAID are working with partners on a global campaign to prevent and treat fistula with the goal of making the condition rare in developing regions of sub-Saharan Africa
and South Asia. It is imperative that Congress supports ongoing efforts to end fistula and address economic and social conditions that allow it to persist.
