Dear Colleague:

We want to draw your attention to an invitation you should have already received from the Coalition for the Life Sciences (CLS). On
Wednesday, April 11th at 12:00 noon,
CLS cordially invites you to attend a briefing entitled
What Role Does Science Have in Solving the Opioid Crisis in the
Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2043. The distinguished speaker will be
Peter W. Kalivas, PhD, from the Medical University of South Carolina.

In 2016, more than 42,000 lives were lost due to opioid overdose. The opioid epidemic is now one of the most pressing public health questions facing the nation. Current treatments
for opioid addiction are replacement therapies, such as methadone, that do not directly treat the changes in the brain produced by chronic opioid use.

We hope you will join the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus for a very timely and important discussion with Dr. Peter Kalivas, one of the nation’s leading addiction
researchers, as he discusses new discoveries that are leading to cures for opioid addiction, not just a supplement for the addiction. Dr. Kalivas will also discuss how the brain adapts to repeated exposure to addictive drugs and he will show how science can
reverse this process. Please RSVP to Lynn Marquis at

The Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus provides a forum where Members and staff can interact directly with preeminent researchers responsible for important scientific
discoveries. Many of the stunning advances, made possible by NIH funding, highlighted in these presentations have led to improved understanding of the cause, treatment, and prevention of human disease.

If you would like to join the Biomedical Research Caucus, please contact Drew Hatter (
in Congressman Stivers’ office or Molly Fishman (
in Congresswoman Speier’s office.
