Tomorrow – Discussion with the Director of the National Cancer Institute

Dear Colleague:

Please join the Cancer Survivors Caucus as we host a discussion with the newly instated Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Dr. Ned Sharpless.

Cancer has touched nearly every person in the United States in some way. According to the NCI, in 2017 alone over 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and nearly 600,000 people will lose their battles with cancer. However, recent
advances in cancer research and treatments have drastically improved the survival rate, allowing the number of people living beyond their cancer diagnosis to top 14.5 million. The NCI has been a driving force behind that progress.

Dr. Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless himself has a long career at the forefront of the battle to wipe out cancer. Prior to his appointment at NCI, Dr. Sharpless directed of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
where he focused on understanding the link between aging and cancer. His contributions have helped lead to novel therapies for melanoma, lung cancer, and breast cancer.

Please join us for this roundtable with Dr. Sharpless on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Cannon 234. Staff are welcome to attend. If you have any questions or to RSVP, please contact Ethan Van Ness at 5-2095 or
