Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to join the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), a new caucus founded by Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX) and Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) in the 115th
Congress. The caucus aims to strengthen ties between the United States and ASEAN, and foster a dialogue on Capitol Hill around issues related to Southeast Asia.

ASEAN, a 10-member group of nations, is Southeast Asia’s primary multilateral organization. Member nations are Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN has a combined population
of 626 million and a combined annual GDP of approximately $2.4 trillion.

More than a third of the United States’ 17 million Asian Americans identify with an ASEAN ethnicity, and U.S. foreign direct investment in ASEAN reached $225 billion in 2015. According to the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council, ASEAN investment into the United
Sates is over five times that of Chinese investment and “exceeds the combined investment from China, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, and New Zealand.” We encourage you
to explore ASEAN’s ties to your district using this tool from the East-West Center and the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council: http://www.asiamattersforamerica.org/asean-state-district. Congress
understanding ASEAN is critical to the United States’ work helping Southeast Asia develop economically, maintain territorial integrity, respect human rights, and build political transparency and the rule of law.

We would welcome your membership in the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on ASEAN. To join or for more information, contact Sid Ravishankar (sid.ravishankar@mail.house.gov) in Congressman Castro’s office,
or Maren Kazin (maren.kazin@mail.house.gov) in Congresswoman Wagner’s office.

Sincerely,

Congressional Joaquin Castro                                                                                     Congresswoman Ann Wagner
